Custom Pergolas Built for Arizona Sun.

A pergola is the one people picture when they want the patio covered but not closed in: an open frame that throws real shade and still lets the sky and the breeze through. We build them attached to the house or freestanding, in cedar, redwood, or engineered steel, sized to the sun angle on your lot. Not a big-box kit. We read where the shade needs to fall and frame it on site.

The point

Open shade that still feels like the outdoors

A solid roof shades the patio and seals off the sky. A pergola does the opposite job on purpose: slatted rafters break the direct sun into dappled shade while the air keeps moving, so the space reads open instead of boxed in. On a dry 100-degree afternoon that airflow is the difference between usable and stifling.

Slat spacing is the lever. Tighter rafters throw more shade and less light; wider ones keep it bright and airy. We set the spacing to how you actually use the space and which direction your sun comes from, then frame it to match.

Attached or freestanding

Off the house or standing on its own

Attached pergolas ledger into the fascia and run straight off the back of the house, flashed and sealed at the connection so the seam never leaks. Freestanding pergolas stand anywhere in the yard on their own posts and footings, which is the call when you want to define a spot away from the house, over a seating area or a garden.

Either way, the posts, beam spans, and footings are engineered for our wind and submitted with the permit. No stock footprint, no kit hardware that rattles loose in the first monsoon.

Louvered pergolas

Louvered roofs: open for the breeze, closed for the rain

A louvered pergola is a roof you can change. Open the louvers for dappled shade and airflow on a dry evening, then close them solid against a monsoon downpour or the hardest afternoon sun. It's the most flexible structure we build and the most premium, the right call when you want one cover that works in every season the East Valley throws at it.

These are custom builds, attached or freestanding, engineered and permitted like anything else we put up. We spec the louver system, the span, the posts, and the finish to your lot and your house, then build it on site. Motorized louvers with a remote and a rain sensor are an option worth pricing on the walk.

Wood or steel

Cedar, redwood, or engineered steel

Cedar and redwood give you the warm, natural pergola look and hold up well here with a re-stain every few years. Engineered steel is the structural pick for long clear spans and a minimal-post, modern line, powder-coated so it doesn't rust or need refinishing. We quote the material that fits your house and your budget instead of pushing one.

Whichever you pick, integrated lighting, fans, and misters wire in cleanly while the frame is open, and it's all priced into the written quote before we leave the driveway.

Frequently asked

Asked and answered.

What's the difference between a pergola and a patio cover?
A patio cover has a solid roof that fully shades and seals the space. A pergola has an open, slatted roof that breaks the sun into dappled shade while letting air and light through. A louvered pergola splits the difference: the slats pivot open or closed on demand.
How much does a custom pergola cost in Gilbert?
Wood and steel pergolas typically run $12,000–$30,000 depending on size, span, and material. Louvered systems run higher because of the operable roof. Quotes are fixed after the on-site walk.
Can a pergola attach to my house?
Yes. Attached pergolas ledger into the existing fascia or roof structure, and the connection is flashed and sealed so it never becomes a leak. They can also be built freestanding anywhere in the yard.
Do louvered pergolas keep the rain out?
Closed, a quality louvered roof sheds rain and channels it to integrated gutters in the posts. Open, it lets the sky and breeze through. That's the whole point of the system: one roof that changes with the weather.
Do you handle the permit and engineering?
Yes, engineering, structural calcs, plan submission, and inspection. You sign the application; we run the rest. Engineering lead time adds 1–3 weeks before construction on non-pre-engineered designs, and we're upfront about that on the proposal.

These guys came heavily recommended by some friends of mine, and they did not disappoint. They poured a stamped wood plank patio roughly 1200 sq feet and it came out looking so good you can't even tell the difference.
